In a constant effort to improve the user experience and incorporate your feedback we'll be making a number of large changes to the site over the next few months. In addition to making improvements upon existing features, we'll be rolling out some brand new items that are still in the works. We can tell you there is a lot to look forward to, but in the meantime we offer you this sneak preview of the new YouTube video browsing page (our "Videos" tab) and invite you to share your feedback with us.

-- Categories will now be found under the "Videos" tab.

-- Dropdown menus make for a smoother transition when clicking through popular pages, ie. "Most Viewed," "Top Favorites," "Recently Featured," etc.

-- Tabs and video browsing pages have a new overall look and feel.

These new changes will go live very soon, so make your voice heard while we're still workin' out the kinks. Send us an email or throw down a comment on this post.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts,

Exploratree is a free web resource where you can download, use and make your own interactive thinking guides.

Exploratree is a free web resource where you can download, use and make your own interactive thinking guides. Thinking guides can support independent and group research projects with frameworks for thinking, planning and enquiry. We’ve provided a set of ready-made guides which you can print out or use online. All of the guides are completely customizable or you can start from scratch and make your own! You can share them and work on them in groups too.

This is the Beta / trial version of Exploratree so please do send us your suggestions and comments so we can help make the next version better.

The Exploratree web resource has been developed by Futurelab and emerged out of our work on the Enquiring Minds project. It provides a series of ready-made interactive 'thinking guides' or 'frameworks' which can support students' projects and research. Thinking guides support the thinking or working through of an issue, topic or question and help to shape, define and focus an idea and also support the planning required to investigate it further. Exploratree guides can be used as a basis for whole class discussion, or emailed to individuals or groups to complete. They can also be used as a presentation tool to share your findings and thinking with others. As well as providing a set of ready to use thinking guides, which are completely customisable and shareable, Exploratree also enables teachers and students to create their own simply and easily.

With Exploratree you can:

  • Use our ready-made thinking guides
  • Make a new thinking guide from scratch
  • Use it to set class projects
  • Print them out (they can go as big as A0)
  • Change and customise thinking guides, you can add or change text, shapes, images etc.
  • As a teacher, you can set up the sequence that you want the thinking guide to be revealed, so that you can stage the thinking activity
  • You can fill in a thinking guide and complete your project on the website
  • You can present your project
  • You can send your thinking guide to a whole group of people
  • You can submit a thinking guide for comments, so it can't be edited but just reviewed
  • Work in groups on the same thinking guide

The Exploratree idea came from observing the process of classroom enquiry. Working with teachers and children over a term in Autumn 2006, we found that the collages and projects that the students were working on could benefit from being created digitally as they could be more easily edited and changed, presented to the group, and shared with other people. We also found that many teachers and students find thinking guides a very useful resource in the classroom and that a website where you can print, share and set thinking guide projects could really help on enquiry projects. We hope you find Exploratree useful.

About

mind42.com

In Mind42, 42 is not only the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything! 42 means FOR TWO and indicates the collaborative character of mind42, because that is exactly what mind42 is: A collaborative browser-based online mind mapping tool.

Just open the browser and launch the application when needed - it behaves like a classical desktop application!

Mind42 is a web application - however, this doesn't mean yout have to set your comfort aside. Short answer: A very useful image based method for brainstorming

However, this short answer only covers a fraction of what mind42 is about. And of course there is a more precise description of mind mapping available at Wikipedia.

Mind mapping is about collecting ideas arranged in a tree like diagram. From a programmers point of view, the creation of such diagrams requires graphical processing. As web browsers weren't able to do graphical processing for a long time, such applications only existed as classical desktop applications which had to be installed. But times have changed, computers got faster and browsers became more powerful. Mind42 is one of the first solutions for mind mapping which is a pure web application - with all it's advantages. No installation required - Accessable everywhere!

Being a web application, mind42 enables another interesting feature realizable on the web: Collaboration. Brainstorming is no single user activity - the more people take part in a brainstorming session, the better the results will be. When using mind42, every participant of a brainstorming session has an immediately updated view onto all the already collected ideas.

Interface

The mind42 mind map edit interface

Creating a mind map with mind42 is very intuitive and easy to master. After creating your first mindmap you will see the root node of your map. By clicking it, it will be focused (blue border) and a menu will appear beyond the node. Such a menu exists for every map item in mind42 and holds the available actions for this node. This includes adding child or sibling nodes, deleting the node, or changing node attributes like it's color or icon. To edit the content of any node within the map just double click it.

Newly created nodes will be aligned automatically, but of course you can change their order. To achieve this, just drag the node to the desired place - a grey preview will show where it would be after dropping. Besides the automatic layouting of the map, mind42 also helps you to keep the overview by offering features like the birdview, zoom and branch collapsing. To collapse a whole branch just click the "-" sign beside the node.

Collaboration

The collaboration dialog

The main benefit of using mind42 (besides its hight availability directly in the web-browser) is collaboration.

To start collaborating on a mindmap, just open the collaboration dialog by clicking the link "Invite and manage collaborators" in the top menu bar. In this dialog, you can send invitation e-mails to your friends and colleagues. The mail will contain a link pointing them directly to the mind map editor. They just have to open a link to start working on the map - no download, no installation.

When multiple users are online at the same time, every participant will see the changes the others made instantly.

Publishing

Another possibility of letting others see your map is publishing. By clicking the antenna icon in the top left corner of the application the publish dialog will be opened. Within this dialog you can select whether your map should be publicly available or not. When choosing to make the map public, you'll get different links which will allow visitors to reach your map. You could send out mails with the link to the map, or you could link from or integrate it into another web page.
